How Can I Update My Ipod to Ios 10

I work for a company that has 28 5th gen touch iPod's. So far 3 of the 28 have updated to the new IOS 10.0.2 and the others are asking to update. This is strange because apple does not support 5th gen iPod's to be updated but here we are.I backed up a few of the iPod's (different from the updated ones as they were not backed up before the update) with the 9.3.5 update and tried restoring the iPod's that updated to 10.0.2 using there restore points but it failed. I then proceeded to downloading the 9.3.5.ipsw file and tried restoring them that way but again failed. I have tried all the basic's you would do from restarting the iPod's and computer to checking for iTunes updates and reinstalling iTunes. I am at a loss and need help. Is this something apple should be fixing since they released an incompatibly update that has paralyzed my iPod's?

I'd definitely contact Apple support, show them your proof of purchase that they are iPod 5th gen and ask them why they got the iOS 10 update. That's a big screw up. I'm surprised we have not seen more reports.

Did you check the model #'s? Here's the 5th Gen (with years released) -A1509: 2014-06,A1421: 2013-05,A1421: 2012-10 and for the 6th Gen -A1574: 2015-07 (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204217)

It sounds like they've bricked themselves.  You're right, that generation isn't supported for the update.  Looks like Apple has figured out yet another way to force users of older devices to buy the latest - offer the update on the old device, brick said device upon updating, and not allow it to be backed off to the old version of the OS.  And people wonder why I hate Apple...

Put the ipod touches in true DFU mode to restore to a lower version of iOS. The display remains dark in true DFU mode.

1. Plug your device into your computer with a USB cable.

2. Turn off the device.Hold the Power button for 3 seconds.

3. Hold the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds.

4. Release the Power button but keep holding the Home button.

5. After about 15 seconds you will be alerted by iTunes saying that it has detected a device in Recovery Mode.

You nailed it on the head Brian_Noga. After taking another look through all the iPod's it turns out that 8 of them were 6th gen mixed with 20 5th gen. We were able to find the correct ipsw file and restore them all back to the 9.3.5 update by using the DFU mode that Kao Saephan mentioned. I would like to add that the new IOS 10.0.2 update has issue that need to be worked out. When trying to do anything it would freeze and you were left handcuffed with a device that was not up to the standard that apple likes everyone to believe.
